ANNA BROELL BRESNICK - Statement

Having transitioned from sculpture to drawing a number of years ago, my first priority was to search for a meaningful image that could become the vehicle for my artistic expression. I became interested in the motions and interactions with nature of birds. They can be used to express a vast number of things ranging from the very personal to the universal. Most important for me is that they seem to be, besides humans, the only animal that can transverse the boundaries of land, water and air. They are affected, like humans, by the disastrous ecological events of our time, can transport us from one world to another and show us the beauty of soaring.

Because of my many years working as a sculptor, I easily fell into the category of drawing in conjunction with collage – the use of non-drawing materials such as plastic, wood, objects, etc. – the need to add physical things; to construct. I’m very anxious to take my ideas to a new level by building more of the material into the two-dimensional/drawing aspects of the work, It is important to me not to let the incorporation of collage diminish the importance of the drawing aspects of the work but to give it an increased energy and depth of meaning.
